With the introduction of shoppable posts, Instagram is embracing the e-commerce side of its platform and allowing users to take every step of their purchasing journey—from discovery to checkout—directly from the app—though eliminating the unnecessary steps between discovering a cool product and placing an order. Using these posts, you’ll be able to transform your Instagram into a digital storefront that users can browse and shop.
How It Works
Each shoppable post has a small shopping bag icon in the bottom left-hand corner of the picture. When a user taps on the image, a pop-up “product tag” displays the featured item’s (or items’) name and price. Tapping on this tag brings the user to a product description page on Instagram. From there, they can go to your website, save the product, or continue to browse your products on Instagram. Some brands even have access to in-app checkout, although this feature is still limited to select businesses.
You can tag up to five products per image or video and up to twenty products per carousel. In stories, you can add products to your videos and images by using a “product sticker.”
Requirements for Instagram Shoppable Posts
Before you can set up your Instagram digital storefront, you’ll need to first check that you meet all of IG’s eligibility requirements:
Your products must be considered physical objects and comply with Instagram’s commerce policies.
You must have the latest version of the Instagram app on iOS or Android.
You must have an Instagram Business account
Your Business account must be connected to a Facebook catalog via your FB Page.
Provided that you meet these 5 simple requirements, you’ll be all set to connect a catalog and start selling on Instagram.
How to Set Up Your Catalog and Create Your First Post
Connecting your Catalog
Before you can create your first shoppable post, you have to first connect a catalog of products to your Instagram account, and there are 2 ways you can go about this—either through Facebook’s Catalog Manager, which you can use to connect an existing FB catalog or create a new one, or through one of Facebook’s e-commerce partners:
Using the Catalog manager, you can either create a catalog from scratch or connect a Facebook catalog to your IG account. Keep in mind that to use product tags and stickers, you’ll need to create an e-commerce catalog from the list of options.
If you have a BigCommerce or Shopify account, you can connect it to your Instagram account by submitting it for review. You can do this by going to your profile’s settings. Just tap Business, and tap Shopping on Instagram. Then follow the steps to submit your account for review. While the process usually takes only a few days, it sometimes it can take longer. Before you get started, just make sure that the Facebook account connected to your account on BigCommerce or Shopify is the same one connected to your Instagram account.
Using Product Tags and Stickers
Tagging a product in a post or IG Story is as easy as tagging a friend.
To add a shoppable tag to a post, you’ll simply start by uploading a photo as you would normally. Then, in the next step (where you normally add captions and locations), you’ll see the option to tag a product. Just begin typing the product name, and select it from the drop-down list. After that, you’re good to go! You can add product tags to both new and old posts.
Making your Stories shoppable is a bit different as it uses “stickers,” not tags. However, the basic principle is the same. After uploading your photo or video, you’ll select the product sticker from the product tray and select the product you want to feature. From there, you can move the sticker around and change the text color by tapping the sticker.

Step #2: Choose Your Niche
Once you know what type of business you want to run, you need to choose your niche within that industry.
What a niche is is a specialized subsection of an industry.
A few examples would be:
Fitness for retired people
The ideal scenario for you when you’re choosing a niche is for you to be a big fish in a little pond rather than a little fish in a big pond. You want to be the major player in your niche and you want that niche to be one where people are actually spending their money.
For example, choosing a niche related to doing things on a budget means you’re marketing to people who are trying to save money rather than spend it.
On the other hand, people marketing products that wealthy people purchase are going to have an easier time convincing their customers to spend money.
The mistake that many people make is they think they can be everything to everyone.
That’s a mistake.
Choosing a niche allows you to:

Develop a detailed marketing plan
Form an identity
While you can get away with playing around with your niche a little bit in the beginning, you want to find your niche sooner rather than later to give your business direction.
Once you have your business model and niche, you can create your first funnel.
Step #3: Create Your First Funnel
So, you have your business model and your niche.
Now you need to build out your first funnel so you can start making money.
But what the heck is a funnel?
A sales funnel is the path that people follow from finding out about you or your brand to making a purchase from you.
Check out this visual for a better idea of what I mean.
To give you an example that just about everyone can relate to, let’s think about McDonald’s:
You see an ad or get a coupon in the mail
You see a McDonald’s on your drive
You go into the restaurant to get your discounted cheeseburger
The cashier gives you an upsell – fries, drink or a combo meal?
Very rarely do people go into McDonald’s and just get their single cheeseburger. McDonald’s makes their money on their upsells when you buy friends or a soda.
That’s the basis of a sales funnel.
What that looks like in the online world is something like:
You run a Facebook ad
People click from your ad to a landing page with a free report
You email them your free report and then offer them an eBook for $10 a week or two later
They buy the book and you offer them a course
They buy the course and you offer them a live event or consulting
Sales funnels aren’t that complicated – they just seem that way in the beginning.
Some social media sites are making it difficult for businesses, so why not try Instagram?
Getting your brand to a global audience couldn’t be easier in the age of social media. Websites such as Facebook and Twitter have become the first point of call for businesses wanting to engage socially, which is great if you’ve got the budget to keep behemoths such as Facebook happy. However updates in the way that Facebook works with businesseshave ruffled more than a few feathers; the hard work that goes into building up a steady flow of page ‘likes’ is futile if you’re not willing to fork out extra cash to ’promote’ your posts. So where should you seek social engagement?
Although owned by Facebook following its takeover in 2012, image-sharing app Instagram remains a standalone brand through which businesses can connect with their audience. At the end of last year Instagram had 300 million users, a huge percentage of which use the app to keep up with their favourite celebrities and brands. While this figure still pales when placed next to Facebook’s 1.35 billion monthly users, there are plenty of reasons for your business to migrate to Instagram without any regrets:
1. Harvest the power of the hashtag
Much like on Twitter (and latterly Facebook) the hashtag is the key to tapping into conversations and communicating your style to your audience on Instagram. Categorising your posts both helps you identify with your audience and also seek them out; you can experiment with hashtagging as social listening experiments to gauge how your audience differs between hashtags. Once you build up a following, creation of your own unique brand-specific hashtags is a great way to engage personally with your audience.
Most users agree: “We all look better under an Instagram filter”. While it may not seem like ‘looking good’ should be top of your business checklist, building your brand DNA is important to identifying with your audience. Instagram could be a great way to personalise your brand with images of your staff. The ease with which you can romanticise your images with Instagram’s handy filter and edit tools makes for high engagement.

3. Think outside the box
Instagram allows you to be truly creative with your brand – show off your creative side with a feed of interesting visuals. Some of the most successful Instagram gurus around the world generate engagement by thinking about how to use the app in an innovative way. A shining example of this is Tourism Australia: their social media manager Jesse Desjardins hit the headlines by getting the rest of the travelling community to do the work for him. Tourism Australia accepts image contributions from anyone and everyone, and being the most followed travel and Instagram account worldwide with 1.2 million followers it would seem they’ve got the right idea!
While Facebook shows no sign of slowing down as the King of Social Media, your business’s approach to social engagement should be multifaceted in order to reach the largest market possible.
As a subsidiary of Facebook, Instagram is best used to engage with a creative audience whilst your Facebook and Twitter accounts stir up conversation. Ensuring your social media presence is interlinked is just good business practice.
